Hello adventurers and dungeon masters alike. Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 25th boon of our epic boons 5e series. Today we’re going to be taking a look at boon of truesight which is pretty appropriately named it all honesty for what it is, but it’s also one of the best boons we’ve covered in the series so far, so i really hope you guys enjoy it. That being said, let’s take a quick look at its mechanics so we know exactly what we’re talking about.
Mechanics
You have truesight out to a range of 60 feet.
Once again pretty much what the name implies. If you’re unfamiliar with truesight and it lets you look through a normal and magical darkness see invisible creatures and objects automatically detect the visual illusions and succeed on saving throws against them and perceive the original form of a shape-shifter or a creature that is transformed by magic. Don’t miss this what is the boon of speed?
You can also see into the ethereal plane at the same range. Basically lets you but gives you super-powered eyes that do everything except pierce through actual cover. So that’s pretty good stuff in all honesty great as a matter of fact. That being said, let’s take a look at my personal thoughts on it. Do you know what is the boon of dimensional travel?
Thoughts
Personally as much as i hate to say it, i don’t think i’d allow this in one of my games. Illusions are for the most part a staple to every dm’s toolbox and it just be ashamed to risk losing all of them for a simple boon. I think in terms of temporary application this could be useful for like a day or so maybe or for a particular quest line it might be useful or even put it in a consumable item like a potion that when you swallow it you get the boon of truesight for an hour but you also loose the ability to speak and communicate something like that would be pretty interesting.
Truesight is a very strong ability. If wanted to experiment with it while still making use of hidden objects and mechanics try replacing illusory Magic’s with intricate mundane camouflage. Truesight defeats disguise self but not someone in an actual disguise. The same is true for traps and secret doors. Truesight also is defeated by forms of heavy obscurement that aren’t darkness. Perhaps murky water, swarms of harmless insects, dense fog patch, whiteout conditions during heavy snowfall, overgrown vegetation. You can also check out this boon of irresistible offense.
As for illusory magic beach my detected, it’s being seen through is determined by the individuals spells wording. For instance color spray has no save and while a creature being effected by it would detect that is illusory magic, they would still be potentially blinded by it. Also check out boon of magic resistance.
A creature with truesight being assailed by a combatant utilizing shadow blade still takes damage. Truesight creature would still be effected by silence as well. Truesight is defeated by “phantasm” magic too. Several illusory spells effects take place in the mind of the creature and bypass truesights normal protective qualities.
Funnily most visual illusion Magic’s with the exception of minor illusion say that upon figuring out the effect, the effect can be seen through. Minor illusion cannot be seen through by truesight, though it is automatically known to be illusory magic. Don’t miss this boon of spell mastery.
Conclusion
If you have any ideas on how to use it or ways to incorporate into your game i’d really like to hear them down in the comments beneath. Thank you so much for checking out guys, i really appreciate it and i hope you all have a great day and as always happy adventuring.
