Hello battle masters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 7th combat maneuver we’re looking at. Today we’re gonna be taking a look at lunging attack 5e which is perfect for those hard to reach enemies. You’ll understand what i mean in a little bit here, this one has a decent amount of utility to it circumstantially and against certain foes there’s a good chance it’s invaluable.
This also stacks really nicely with a certain feat we’ve been written about but i’ll get into that a little bit later here. That being said, let’s take a look at the description. It written as followed. You may also like to read 5e what counts as an attack.

Description
When you make a melee weapon attack on your turn, you can expend one superiority die to increase your reach for that attack by 5 feet. If you hit, you add the superiority die to the attack’s damage roll.
Very very cool stuff there! Little bit to unpack though, let’s take a look at the overview and break it down a little bit for us. You can also read what is the disarming maneuver in d&d?
Overview
It essentially written as followed: When attacking, expend a dnd superiority die. The attacks range increases by five feet. Upon a hit add the superiority roll to the damage.
I really like this when it comes to dealing with hovering, floating or flying foes that are always kind of just out of reach. This works incredibly well with sentinel tools you might imagine kind of dropping their movement to zero and then having them fall to the ground. Also read what is the sweeping maneuver in 5e?
That being said, it’s a little bit tricky in terms of how useful it is outside of that. Reason being is unlike a lot of these other combat maneuvers, you still need to roll to hit. A lot of them say after you hit or when you hit but this one says when attacking. You can also check out our other dnd 5e battle master maneuvers.
What that means is there’s still transfer you to miss and waste disappear or die in the process. As cool as i think this is mechanically it’s a little bit lackluster. Not only is it a potential ways to the superiority die but it specifies that it can only be a melee weapon attack. Which means you can use spells with it either to give it an extra boost. I’d homebrew it so you could but by raw you cannot. It’s for that….that i’m a little bit underwhelmed by it, it’s really cool thematically as are most of these but in terms of mechanal benefits it’s you’re better off carrying a whip with you if that make sense.
