Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 2nd episode of our Unearthed Arcana invocation series if you’re unfamiliar with Unearthed Arcana it’s essentially when wizards released play testable material and just to gauge its effectiveness stuff like that, A lot of DMs use it, a lot of don’t…it kind of depends on what your playstyle is.
But just to know what your options are we’re writing articles on it. Today we’re going to be taking a look at burning hex 5e and this is one of the cooler ones at least in terms of how that works mechanically. In any case let’s take a look at the description here. Description
First and foremost there is a prerequisite and that is you have to pick the hexblade as your patron. Meaning if you pick the fiend, the archfey anything like that no dice. And it reads as followed.
As a bonus action, you cause a target cursed by your Hexblade’s Curse to take fire damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1).
Pretty cool stuff there! Honestly i really like hexblade thematically there are some obvious problems with the way this is worded and i’ll explain those a little bit later on. Let’s take it down to overview. Apart from this you can also read can warlocks get polymorph?
Overview
Essentially use a bonus action to cause fire damage, (equal to charisma mod) to a creature effected by hexblades curse.
The biggest problem with this is that it doesn’t specify a range. So long as the targets cursed and there is a restriction on the curse i guess but you don’t need to be able to see it you’d only be able to be anywhere near it doesn’t have to be in the same plane of existence as you none of that really matters.
It’s just damage. I don’t if you were to put like a range of like 30 feet on it, then it’s be fine with it in one of my games. It’s not inherently terrible, there’s a lot of invocations that are like this already though, I mean i might even allow it to be reskin for different damage as well.
