Eldritch Adept Feat DnD 5E

Hello adventurers of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 70th episode of our feat series. Back due to popular demand into the recent release of tasha’s cauldron of everything we’ve got some work to do and since we’ve already done a couple of the feats we’re going to be moving on to eldritch adept feat dnd 5e.

As i mentioned earlier this is found in the tasha’s cauldron of everything book and this feat is going to be a little bit different from every other feat in the playlist but it’ll be very close to a couple coming up in the future here. So if you haven’t heard anything about tasha’s cauldron of everything it’s been met with some controversy, some praise as any book is when it’s released but there are some very unique feats regarding the tasha’s cauldron of everything, eldritch adept is the first we’re going to be covering but it follows the same kind of template as fighting initiate and a metamagic adept as well.

Really what these are meant to do is they’re meant to diversify your character’s skill set by incorporating features of other classes. For that reason if you’re familiar with the overall theme of this website they’re actually a little bit tricky for me to do write articles on just due to the completionist nature of this particular website.

So without further ado let’s check out the description here and then i’ll take you through a walkthrough and share my thoughts at the end and also if you’d like to check out all the dnd 5e feats in their entirety you can chose the link. Now without further ado let’s checkout its description so that we all can know what is the eldritch adept feat?.

Description

The prerequisites are spell casting or pact magic feature and reads as followed:

Studying occult lore, you have unlocked eldritch power within yourself: you learn one Eldritch Invocation option of your choice from the warlock class. If the invocation has a prerequisite of any kind, you can choose that invocation only if you’re a warlock who meets the prerequisite. Whenever you gain a level, you can replace the invocation with another one from the warlock class.

This is really honestly great! As far as i can tell i will be of course getting into this a little bit more in depth as we go through the walkthrough and eventually my personal thoughts. But the ability to change based off of whenever you gain a level is super useful for most campaigns especially if you have one that isn’t really getting as much use as you think another one might, you can adapt on the fly, so i think that’s really interesting kind of prevents you from making a bad choice that you later regret.

I do think this description could have a little bit more in it like maybe a cantrip from the warlock 5e spell list or something like that maybe just eldritch blast or what have you but you know what odds are you already need to have spell casting to go with this, so odds are you already have access to eldritch blast in one form or another (Here is our best blog post on 5e ways to get eldritch blast). Now let’s move on to it’s walkthrough here.

Walkthrough

So really there’s not too much to say here. You learn one eligibilication and you can switch it out everytime you level up. Now what is interesting is the sheer number and usefulness of each dnd 5e eldritch adept invocations so there’s about 50 odd eldritch invocations you can choose from that are in the core rules and then there’s a couple extra that are unearthed arcana.

However tasha’s cauldron of everything adds in a couple as well so really what you might take from it depends on what currently exists in the 5E core rules. Odds are wizards of the coast is only going to be adding more in and i am a little bit worried about that and i’ll talk about that a little bit later in my thoughts.

But notable ones are devil’s sight which gives you the ability to not only see in darkness but in magical darkness as well up to a rather impressive range. Mask of many faces which lets you cast disguise self at will and beast speech which lets you talk to animals at will. These are some of my favorites and i usually do play utility based casters so these are the ones i’ve most commonly used but even things like eyes of the rune keeper or the ability to cast detect magic at will.

These might all be things that you really gain a lot from. However it does depend on your game, so odds are if unless you’re getting this feat as you’re starting out the game whether or not your DM is giving you one at level one or you’re not taking or you’re starting your game at level four or beyond.

It might be a little bit tricky to determine which invocation you’re going to get the most usage out of, it would of course be worth talking with the DM about that getting their thoughts on the matter, maybe running some ideas past them, however push comes to shove you wait until you level up and you can pick a new one.

Which is really really good stuff and kind of provides a whole other level of customization on a level up in addition to whatever class features you might be getting. Very cool stuff! Now let’s move on to my personal thoughts on it. Do not forget to check out our elemental adept 5e.

Thoughts

Is eldritch adept good! Of course overall i really do like the idea of eldritch adept. It kind of circumvents a lot of multi-classing that you might have to do to get the ideal character you want. That being said, however the warlock is arguably one of the most multi-classed into casters. Simply because of their short rests but even aside from that, this particular feat can be useful even for the warlocks themselves, if they really want to fine-tune their build or if they see it as being more valuable than any other feat they might have access to.

Which might be likely depending on their play style. By that what i mean is, is if you’re playing a full caster warlock there really aren’t a ton of feats that are super useful to you. I mean warcaster comes to mind but outside of that it really kind of comes down to circumstantial evidence you know like, by that what i mean is ritual caster might make sense if you weren’t already a ritual caster and if you didn’t take a book of ancient secrets for example.

So it is interesting to think about a warlock taking this, one extra invocation would likely go along way. Especially at those higher levels where the power of the implications realy are what’s driving your character. It is interesting for sure.

That being said, maybe some other classes will benefit from this as well, i would imagine ranged-based rogues would take this just due to the devil’s sight invocation, the ability to gain not only superior dark vision but also peer through magical darkness would give like the arcane trickster for example a huge boost to their overall effeciency, especially if they don’t have dark vision beforehand, by that same kind of law you could make an argument for the eldritch knight gaining a lot out of it as well.

It is interesting stuff! So this was likely going to go a long way for anyone that is lacking utility, a lot of the invocations are geared towards that eye of the rune keeper being one of the most notable, the ability to perceive and read all languages is certainly helpful. With all that out of the way i do have a couple concerns as it relates to this.

The largest one and rather the more encompassing one is that we don’t know everything about every eldritch invocation that’s going to be released in the future right! Because of that this feat might lead to some potential game breaking mechanics. I’m not too too worried about it from my standpoint, just because i’m fairly confident in my abilities to combat a lot of that behaviour but there are a lot of dungeon masters out there who don’t really believe that’s the right way to play the game.

Whether they’re right or wrong i don’t know i think it all kind of depends on circumstances but this is likely going to at one point or another lead to some rather interesting meadows. At least i believe it will, it might not, you might think warlock invocations are useless next to almost every other feat.

To that you know i guess there’s a couple that might outshine it…warcaster, ritual caster even sentinel or great weapon master all of those in the right hands might be overall better than this. That when compared to with some feats like skilled being the most notable example.

So with that in mind i think this feat sits somewhere in the middle in terms of most objective player eyes. That being said however another thing i am a little bit concerned with is this detracting away from the warlocks popularity. The warlock is arguably one of my favorite classes in the game.

Right up there with the arcane trickster or even the arcane archer to a lesser extent. That being said however one of my favorite things is multi-classed warlock builds, i think they’re very fun from a mechanical angle and they always seem to stretch the game in interesting ways, which as a caster main i always like to see.

Conclusion

In any case let me know what you think down beneath in the comment section. Be sure to mention any thoughts, questions, comments or concerns. In any case thank you so much for checking out this article guys i really do appreciate it and let me know what your favorite eldritch invocation is down beneath. With all that out of the way i hope you all have a great day and as always happy adventuring.
