Hello warlocks of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the tenth installment in our eldritch invocations series. Today we’re going to be taking a look at probably the creepy-crawlies invocation out there. Today we’re taking a look at cloak of flies dnd you know what…it is almost quite literally what it sounds like we’re gonna break it down anyways.
This is absolutely perfect for the creepy-crawly just gross crazy person warlock 5e i really like this, i think it partners just great with the bee speak as well, i think that those two conjuncts work really great with a lot of character builds, a lot of roleplay potential with this as well. I really do just like there’s so much flavor and so many of these invocations i highly recommend just taking a look at them. In any case let’s take a look at the description here.
Description
First and foremost it might be worth noting that there is a prerequisite and that is you have to be at least fifth level. This means it has to be 5 warlock levels and not total character levels. So just bear that in mind and the description reads as followed.
As a bonus action, you can surround yourself with a magical aura that looks like buzzing flies. The aura extends 5 feet from you in every direction, but not through total cover. It lasts until you’re incapacitated or you dismiss it as a bonus action.
The aura grants you advantage on Charisma (Intimidation) checks but disadvantage on all other Charisma checks. Any other creature that starts its turn in the aura takes poison damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 0 damage). Once you use this invocation, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Wow i really like this one a lot, i really do role play potential is off the chain. In addition to that it does a lot of really cool stuff utility wise. That being said, let’s break it down a little bit further in our overview section. In any case you can also check out this improved pact weapon.
Overview
When you really boil it down the description reads as followed. Use a bonus actionto surround yourself with a magical aura. It extends 5ft in every direction, with the exception of total cover. You have advantage on intimidation checks but have disadvantage on all other charisma based checks. All creatures who start its turn within the aura take poison damage equal to your charisma modifier. You may also like to read lifedrinker 5e.
You know what is pretty decent assuming you’re well i mean charisma is your main spell cast modifier so it should be really high to begin with. So you’re dealing with a three or four more than likely and that’s a decent amount of flat damage, because it’s around you right! So that’s around eight spots that could potentially take damage and that’s really helpful, especially if you’re playing hexblade warlock i can see this being super useful.
How many times can you use eldritch invocations? Hexblade probably the obvious way to go, so advantage on intimidation and disadvantage on deception, performance and persuasion you can use a once per short or long rest. And poison damage it with your charisma modifier. I think that’s super great, the biggest downside to this sadly is that a decent chunk of monsters you’re gonna run into, our resistant two are just outright immune to poison. You can also read fiendish vigor 5e. and also check out the difference between cloak of displacement vs cloak of protection.
I mean there would be a way around that by taking something like elemental adept but i mean there is not a whole. I mean you know what there is a decent amount of poison spells that warlocks do get access to so i might consider it but it might be worth chatting with your DM and see if you can homebrew so it does a different type of damage. Also read maddening hex 5e. and also check out the difference between cloak of flame vs lightning coil.
Conclusion
In any case those are my thoughts on it, if you have any ideas, any cool ways to use cloak of flying 5e or any cool stories there or if you’re picking it please tell me down beneath i’d really like to hear from you guys, i love every comment, and i know everyone else does as well. It kind of just creates a bigger sense of community and we all help each other out quite a bit which i really like.
