Hello warlocks of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 9th episode of our what is eldritch invocation? series. Today we’re going to be taking a look at dnd chains of carceri this is honestly perfect for those how shall we say more ethnically jaded among you like of a better term. I’ll get into that a little bit later, that being said, with that intro out of the way let’s take a look at the description.
Description
First and foremost it might be worth noting that there is a prerequisite for this invocation and that is you have to be of at least 15th level and have the pact of the chain feature. The description reads as followed.
You can cast hold monster at will – targetting a celestial, fiend or elemental without expending a spell slot or material components, you must finish a long rest before you can use this invocation on the same creature again.
A couple things i’d like to point out there, even though it says i will, you still have to burn an action to use it, i know i’m sorry but it’s the case. Secondly you can only use a once on the same creature regardless of whehther or not it succeeds or fails so just bear that in mind.
Thirdly you can actually use this on multiple creatures before that long rest but it just can’t be the same one, you gain what i mean. In any case you can also read this article called dnd ancient tome.
Hold Monster:
- Level: 5th
- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range/Area: 90 ft
- Components: V, S, M *
- Duration: Concentration 1 Minute
- School: Enchantment
- Attack/Save: WIS Save
- Damage/Effect: Paralyzed
Choose a creature that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for the duration. This spell has no effect on undead. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the spell ends on the target.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 5th. The creatures must be within 30 feet of each other when you target them. * – (a small, straight piece of iron)

Overview
Target one celestial, fiend, or elemental within 90 feet. On a failed wisdom save they are paralized for 1 minute. It can repeat the saving throw at the end of its turn and you can only cast this on an individual creature once per long rest.
Okay so the paralyzed condition does a couple things first and foremost it can’t move or speak. It also automatically fails any dexterity and strength based saving throw and you have advantage on attack rolls against it which is really great. You can also read what is the devil’s sight spell?
Also attacks within 5 feet of it are guaranteed to be crits which is super amazing, it’s why hold monster and hold person are one of my true my top all-time favorite spells they’ve been part of the DM for a longtime now and they will be for a long time in the futurei can all by guarantee that. By what it means wear this lens light to certain kind of character is if you’re sadistic character with the main drive of completely eradicating a certain species basically you be it celestial, fiends or elementals this is a great one to go with it is such an obvious choice and it works great with the character motivation and not that i descriminate against celestial, fiends or elementals but just saying for that kind of sick twisted person. This invocation is perfect for them.
