Hold Person Spell DnD 5E

Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out a very special and 38th episode of our second level spell series. Today we’re going to be taking a look at hold person spell dnd this spell is one of the most commonly chosen and commonly used spells by characters and DMs alike and i’ll get into why that is in a little bit here.

It is usable by the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, warlock and the wizard as well as a ton of subclasses. It is also found in the players handbook so we should all have access to it. To be quite fair, if you have access to this spell i would strongly recommend you choose it because let me tell you it is something very very special. That being said, let’s take a look at the mechanics and see if you can figure out exactly why that is.

Mechanics

  • Level: 2nd
  • Casting Time: 1 Action
  • Range/Area: 60 ft
  • Components: V, S, M *
  • Duration: 1 Minute (Concentration)
  • School: Enchantment
  • Attack/Save: WIS Save
  • Damage/Effect: Paralyzed

So the effect at a glance is as followed: Target a humanoid, on a failed save the target is paralyzed. The target can remake the save at the end of their turn. Ending the spell on a success.

The cast time is one action, the range is 60 feet, the duration is one minute and this is a concentration spell. At higher levels You can target one additional creature within 30feet for each slot level above 2nd. Also check out this can you hold your turn 5e.

Under components are the holy trinity so verbal, material and somatic. The material component in case you’re curious is a small straight piece of iron which is kind of cool! The school is enchantment. Now lets move on to the full description here and really get into the meat and potatoes of this spell. Check out this can you hold a bonus action 5e.

Description

Choose a humanoid that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for the duration. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the spell ends on the target.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can target one additional humanoid for each slot level above 2nd. The humanoids must be within 30 feet of each other when you target them. * – (a small, straight piece of iron)

Very cool stuff! Aabsolutely amazing. Now the reason why this is so good is because of the paralyzed condition. So the paralyzed 5e condition reads as followed:

A paralyzed creature incapacitated and can’t move or speak. The creature automatically fails strength and dexterity saving throws, attack rolls against the creature have advantage and this is the best part. Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attackers is within five feet of the creature. Also check out this dnd 5e hold person on undead.

Needless to say there is a ton of benefit for your melee companions in terms of this spell. You don’t do any damage from it directly but the overall process is pretty amazing when you consider the ramifications of having someone with 3 attacks they can just bombard the person with one crit after another.

This is a special useful if they’re capable of adding extra damage to their attacks much like paladin smites. In any case lets take a moment and go over some alternative uses here. Also read how long can you hold your breath dnd 5e.

Alternative Uses

So the best way to use this is to target one foe and just obliterate them. I think that’s probably the way of most commonly seen this be used and i think it’s very cool and very interesting it’s just a great way of singling out a target and dealing with them quick.

Outside of that this is also a great way of dealing with guards. You can literally cast a spell on them and just walk right around them and they can’t do a single thing to stop you, pretty badass pretty cool, i really like it.

Another great way to use this spell is to use it to interrogate people. Use it to get information on them i get that they can’t speak but it shows that you mean business so when the spell ends, they’re really able to communicate with you very clearly as to not get you angry.

This is also goes double for any spells that manipulate the mind or make a strong argument that any spells related to that would be automatic successes, however that’s up to your dungeon master to decide. You can also check out how long can you hold a spell 5e.
