Riposte DnD 5E Maneuver

Hello battlemasters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 14th option on your maneuvers list today we’re going to be taking a look at dnd 5e riposte, thematically this is probably one of my favorites.

However mechanically i find it’s only mediocre, you may agree it or you may disagree it but in order to form a great opinion on this we’ll have to look in-depth into this combat maneuver. That being said, let’s take a look at the description here so you know what we’re talking about. The description reads as followed.

Table of Contents

Description

When a creature misses you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction and expend one superiority die to make a melee weapon attack against the creature. If you hit, you add the superiority die to the attack’s damage roll.

Very interesting stuff! Once again thematically i really like it. Let’s go through the overview and let me kind of explain to you i feel like it’s kind of underwhelming mechanically. You can also read this fighter 5e and also battle master 5e article as well.

Overview

Essentially let’s after a creature misses expend a reaction and a superiority die, make a weapon attack and add your superiority die to the damage roll.

So a couple criticisms i have of this is it has to be a melee weapon attack that you get hit by or melee attacks whether you get hit by, which means you’re already with in melee range form which means there’s a host of other things you can use your reaction for it, so if you have any doubt regarding of does riposte use reaction?. Then the answer is already given there. You can also check out this trip attack 5e.

So reactions are quite valuable when you’re playing any melee class simply due to attacks of opportunity, so you gotta ask yourself is it worth using my reaction to get one additional attack in even though they’ve already missed and i really don’t have to worry too much or may better saving that reaction for something a little bit more important and pressing such as maybe an attack of opportunity. Ultimately it is not lost on me that there is some benefit to this. I think its peak benefit really shows off when you’ve either multicast into a rogue and you can actually stack this with sneak attack i think that’d be great use for it or if the target is close to death and it has multi attack.

I think those are the two best circumstances to use this, outside of that there are class abilities and there are other maneuvers and dnd riposte feat that i should do a much better job of what this is attempting to do. A great one, although a little bit different in terms of how its activated but hellish rebuke for example uses a reaction i understand it’s on a hit and of course it is one of the best riposte dnd 5e spells.

But if they have multi attack and they miss and they still have a decent chunk of health would it not be worth waiting for them to attack you again and should they hit unload a full blast hellish rebuke versus whatever your damage die is plus an additional superiority dice 5e.

Ultimately it’ll come down to your personal preference in your play style but i’m not super sold on this one. You might disagree with me if you do, i encourage you to voice it. Also read how do you parry in 5e?.
