Hello adventurers of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 1st ever episode of our race series. We’re going to be starting over with the player’s handbook races and moving out fowrward from there. First we’re taking a look at the dnd 5e dragonborn race super fantastic. No one people have played the dragonborn and to be honest one of the coolest races to role-play.
Description
Born of the dragons, as their name proclaims, the dragonborn walk so proudly via a world which greets them with fearful incomprehension. Shaped by draconic gods or the dragons themselves, dragonborn originally hatched from the dragon eggs as a unique race, combining the best attributes of dragons and humanoids.
Some of the dragonborn are faithful servants to original dragons, others form the ranks of soldiers in great wars, and still others find themselves adrift, with no clear calling in their life.
Why is that? why pick them? Let’s find out moving forward now. Before we taking a look into too much traits and mechanics let’s take a look into their naming conventions.
Naming Conventions
So before we actually use any examples here male and female have different names and it’s safe to assume the final syllable of the name is the biggest difference. I will get into that in a little bit here. Their childhood names are actually named after particular instances, endearments, interests or particular habits of their childhood.
I’ll get into that little bit later here. The dragonborn do age incredibly quickly. They also have clan names which the dragonborn would considered to be more realast name of search only with far more prior detach to it and we’ll get into that a little bit more later as well.
DnD 5E Dragonborn Names
- Male Names: Arjhan, Balasar, Bharash, Donaar, Ghesh, Heskan, Kriv, Medrash, Mehen, Nadarr, Pandjed, Patrin, Rhogar, Shamash, shedinn, Tarhun, Torinn.
- Female Names: Akra, Biri, Daar, Farideh, Harann, Havilar, Jheri, Kava, Korinn, Mishann, Nala, Perra, Raiann, Sora, Surina, Thava, Uadjit.
- Childhood Names: Climber, Earbender, Leaper, Pious, Shieldbiter, Zealous.
- Clan Names: Clethtinthiallor, Daardendrian, Delmirev, Drachedandion, Fenkenkabradon, Kepeshkmolik, Kerrhylon, Kimbatuul, Linxakasendalor, Myastan, Nemmonis, Norixius, Ophinshtalajiir, Prexijandilin, Shestendeliath, Turnuroth, Verthisathurgiesh, Yarjerit.
Another important thing to know about the naming conventions here is they based of of draconic. Draconic in case you don’t know it’s very crued language, it’s a very old and as a result not as your find is elvin for example. Draconic language is based on syllables and strong const in its enviviles.
For example if you look at the male names you’ll see the last one torinn. But to a dragonborn it maybe pronounced “tttooorrrr….innnnn” like more crude seperate the syllables a little bit more and pronounce the consonents are little bit heavier.
The difference would be in the female names. I would make you argument that the female names have lighter, gradual end to them. For example the ninth name to know its korinn but the dragonborn it might read “Khhoo-in” instead of the more aggressive “KKKKHHHOOOORRRIN” from a bow you know.
That’s how it my personal take on it, you may disagree or agree persoanlly i’ve kind of against these particular kinds of naming conventions. I find that get in the way of play a little bit but for long run campaigns they can be quite beneficial in terms of establishing new character. Moving on to the traits that are unique to the dragonborn. At the very least it help you get the better idea of what they are.
Traits
The dragonborn have an incredible amount of pride and value their clans, and kin above all else. They would sooner renounce their faith than have their clans fall into ruin. The love for their clans push them to improve themselves, holding themselves to a higher standard than most other creatures could conceive. One of the only ways to gain the trust and respect of a dragonborn is to show similar drive.
Age
In terms of age they grow quite quickly, reaching adulthood after 15 years, they usually live to be around 80.
Size
Their size is considered to be medium at least mechanically. The average height is over 6ft, usually between 6ft and 6.5feet. And an average weight is over 250 pounds. Usually 250 to 350.
Alignment
In terms of alignment, Dragonborns make a conscious effort to pursue either good or evil. Most are considered to be good natured however.
What this means is at the very rare to find a dragonborn that doesn’t have an opinion or stands on an issue. They form opinions rather quickly or rather stubble above them which is part of the fun and actually role-playing one. Let’s take a look at the mechanics now.
Mechanics
First and foremost they have two ability score increases. They gain a +2 to strength and a +1 to charisma. Their speed is a 30 foot walking speed, they can not fly and do not have a traditional swim speed. Which actually lends to its of to another point..drgonborn in 5e do not have wings or tails. Their languages allow them to speak, read and write common and draconic. Which is quite interesting in some small way but not terribly surprising. Now let’s get on to the final part their draconic ancestry.
Draconic Ancestry
Dragon | Damage Type | Breath Weapon |
---|---|---|
Black | Acid | 5by 30ft. line(Dex. Save) |
Blue | Lightning | 5by 30ft. line(Dex. Save) |
Brass | Fire | 5by 30ft. line(Dex. Save) |
Bronze | Lightning | 5by 30ft. line(Dex. Save) |
Copper | Acid | 5by 30ft. line(Dex. Save) |
Gold | Fire | 15ft. cone (Dex. save) |
Green | Poison | 15ft. cone (Con. save) |
Red | Fire | 15ft. cone (Dex. save) |
Silver | Cold | 15ft. cone (Con. save) |
White | Cold | 15ft. cone (Con. save) |
Essentially while you’re building the dragonborn you get to pick which dragonborn they are and it gives you a corresponding “color, damage type and breath weapon” stats.
BreathWeapon
So the breathweapon use your action to exhale your breath weapon. The DC = 8+conmodifier+your proficiency bonus. On a successful save target creatures take half damage. The damage starts at 2d6, and increases based on level (At 6th level 3d6, at a 11th level 4d6 and at 16th level 5d6.) This can be done once per short rest or long rest.
Damage Resistance
You’ve also given a damage resistance Which relates to your corresponding dnd 5e dragonborn breath weapon. You gain elemental resistance to your chosen damage type.
Very interesting stuff and to be honest one of the best features of the dragonborn. Now let’s move on to my personal thoughts on them.
Thoughts
Honestly i can choose a ton of role play opportunities for the dragonborn race as a whole. They most commonly choosen for paladins, they have a great moral compess and to be honest almost all of the paladin archetypes are subclass pick them absolute perfectly.
Not to mention the fact that they get +2 to bonus to strength and +1 bonus to their charisma makes them all but perfectly suited to be a paladin. Charisma being that spellcasting modifier and then being primarily melee strength based fighters.
To be honest with you though, they can fit a variety of classes the draconic blood lined sorcerer for example makes a ton of sense to me and most as you’ve imagined. Even though wizard when make a lot of sense just following the line that a lot of dragonborn pursue self mastery as a life long goal there, so that makes a lot of sense to me.
Along that same way you can make argument for the artificer or even the monk or even the fighter that persuit of self mastery that is core killer being just provides a ton of great role play opportunities as well as interesting justifications and character quotes.
In terms of a little bit rare dragonborn i could definitely see a potential warlock dragonborn in that case a dragonborn would have to have something terrible happen to its clan and swear to do anything for revange on whatever trust passers may hormed them. In during so an ancient evil the dragon may have reached out and the dragonborn make a deal with them in exchange for great power.
something along those lines, to be honest i could justify almost any class putting into the dragonborn just perfectly they’re really great.
Dragonborn Subraces List
- Blue Dragonborn
- Green Dragonborn
- Red Dragonborn
- Draconblood dragonborn
- Ravenite Dragonborn
Conclusion
That’s pretty much all i have to say about them. That being said, i know there is a strong case for them to be fairly underwhelming in terms of lot of the other races in dnd 5e but to be honest i find there great local potential makes up for.
In any case if you have any cool uses, stories, thoughts or opinions about the dragonborn please put it down in the comments beneath i really appreciate giving it a read. Thank you so much guys! i really appreciate you checking out this article. I hope you all have a great day and as always happy adventuring.
