Mage Armor 5E Spell

Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 56th episode of our first level spell series. Today we’re going to be taking a look at dnd 5e mage armor spell guide. Quite frankly one of the most popular spells on the first level spell sheet. Especially for wizards and any kind of gish caster.

It is usable by the sorcerer, wizard and through extension anyone with access to their spell lists and it is found in the players handbook. With that intro out of the way let’s take a look at its mechanics. Apart from this you may also like to read magic items 5e.

Mechanics

  • Level: 1st
  • Casting Time: 1 Action
  • Range/Area: Touch
  • Components: V, S, M *
  • Duration: 8 Hours
  • School: Abjuration
  • Attack/Save: None
  • Damage/Effect: Buff (…)

Your cast time is the standard one action, the range is touch, the duration is an impressive 8 hours. The effect at a glance: Unarmored target’s base AC becomes 13 plus your dexterity mod. You can also read this 5e magic armor cost article.

The components are the holy trinity so somatic, material and verbal meaning you have to gesture with one hand, speak forth an incantation and the material component in case you’re curious is a piece of cure to leather. Would you also like to read medium armor 5e.

And the school is unsurprisingly abjuration. This is once again, it makes sense abjuration although protecting stuff so. You know though that makes sense. That being said, let’s take a look at its description. Also check out this mage armor 5e monk.

Description

You touch a willing creature who isn’t wearing armor, and a protective magical force surrounds it until the spell ends. The target’s base AC becomes 13 + its Dexterity modifier. The spell ends if the target dons armor or if you dismiss the spell as an action. * – (a piece of cured leather)

Very cool stuff! So can you use mage armor on yourself? use it on yourself or a party member or presumably a friendly willing creature if they’re wearing armor it won’t work. However it might be worth noting that they can still use a shield 5e as sage advice really helped clear that up. Don’t miss this mage armor 5e shield.

So shields are allowed but any other piece of armor sadly not. This also doesn’t stack with other unarmored defenses because that’s the way 5e works, you can only pick one calculation you know so just bear that in mind as you’re using it, i do think it’s pretty good though. Especially with that wild 8 hour duration. That being said, let’s check out some alternative uses for it. Also check out this is mage armor a warlock spell?

Alternative Uses

So the best one i could personally think of was using it in gladiatorial combats or in areas where you just don’t have access to your armor but you’ll want that advantage. It’s not concentration at last for 8 hours and it’s to be honest pretty dang great. Also check out monk 5e and maul 5e.

I really like it, so in gladiatorial combat this would really help, on a side not if you wanted to protect some of the more squishy characters in your group or NPCs, this would be a great way of doing that, a fantastic way of doing that. So yeah i just really like it. I think it’s a good spell and i think it should be in almost every casters arsenal should they get access to it through one way or another.
