Longstrider DnD 5E Spell

Hello spellcasters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 55th episode of our first level spell series. Today we’re going to be talking about dnd 5e longstrider spell this spell has a couple misconceptions about it but i’ll get into that a little bit here.

The longstrider 5e is usable by the bard, druid, ranger, wizard and artificer and it is found in the good old players handbook, so we should all have access to it. With that hyped-up introduction out of the way let’s take a look at its mechanics.

Mechanics

  • Level: 1st
  • Casting Time: 1 Action
  • Range/Area: Touch
  • Components: V, S, M *
  • Duration: 1 Hour
  • School: Transmutation
  • Attack/Save: None
  • Damage/Effect: Buff (…)

Its cast time is the standard one action, it’s range is touch, its duration is an impressive one hour. Its effect at a glance targets speed increases by 10 feet. At higher levels one extra target per spell slot above first. And it has the holy trinity for components somatic, material and verbal meaning you have to gesture with one hand, there’s a material component if you’re curious it is a pinch of dirt and a verbal component which means you have to speak forth an incantation.

The school is interestingly enough transmutation which kind of implies it physically changes the creature a little bit but neither here nor there. Let’s check out it’s full description. In any case do you want to know is bane a good spell 5e.

Description

You touch a creature. The target’s speed increases by 10 feet until the spell ends.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 1st. * – (a pinch of dirt)

Really interesting stuff! Honestly this gets a terrible rep as a spell and i can kind of see why to be honest upon first reading. I wasn’t super impressed with it either, it seems like it’s something like expeditious retreat 5e or a ton of other spells might have actually been better or even just taking the dash action would be substantially better but i got news for you i don’t get into a little bit.

Something i want to clarify is this is a touch spell which means you can apply it to other people which is really cool! Doesn’t necessarily have to affect you and that’s gonna be important for a little bit later. That being said, let’s take a look at its alternative uses and see if we can make this spell a little bit more useful. You may also like to read about longbow 5e and longsword 5e.

Alternative Uses

So something else i’d like to point out, it just says speed it doesn’t specify walking speed. So it increases all your speeds by 10 feet. Check out our movement article to figure out exactly how movement works in 5e. Well this is actually really good stuff! So if you’re a character with a fly speed or swim speed or uses flying, swimming or climbing regularly then this might actually be quite beneficial to you or your companions if you find they use those speeds quite a bit. Also read this loading 5e.

Something else i would like to point out……if you’re in a quest line where you have to escort a slower NPC this is a great way to make it a heck of a lot easier for you and speed up that quest by quite a significant magin. I really do think this is an incredibly a circumstantial spell but i really think that circumstantially it can really come in handy if you’re in a pinch. Also check out this lore bard 5e.

Q: Can You Stack Longstrider bg3?

A: The spell lasts for an hour without concentration and so stacks with expeditious retreat and dashing. It’s a tactical spell for offensive and defensive positioning. Another humanoid spellcaster will have a hard time keeping up with you or even gaining sight of you if you are using cover. Most spells require sight of the target. Also check out greataxe 5e cost.

If the spellcaster resorts to holding their spells they risk loosing the spell slot by concentration, holding it too long, or being counterspelled. The latter puts them at a disadvantage for loosing an action to attempt to cast off turn in the first place. Also read this dnd 5e when can you take feats.

A rogue going from 30 to 40 feet of movement translates to 80ft movement on a bonus action dash, 120ft using action as well. The rogue is n this case would have a good chance to out run keep up with if not out run most mounts.

Defensively, melee attackers can’t hit what they can’t reach. I find that most mobility tactics are limited by map size though. Also, use it on your horse or mount. Most of the mounts have great movement already. Here we’ve also done an article with sleep spell 5e explained.

Conclusion

That being said, if you have any cool ideas or alternative uses for longstrider ritual 5e please put them down in the comments beneath, as well as if you have any cool stories or ideas i’m just really curious to see what you guys have to say. That being said guys, thank you so much for checking out i really do appreciate it. I hope you all have a wonderful day and as always happy casting.
