Hello casters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 14th episode for cantrip series it really means a lot to me. Let’s take a look at the infamous green flame blade spell dnd 5e usable by the warlock, the sorcerer and the wizard and it is found in the sword coast adventures guide this is a pretty neat spell and i know a lot of people are a huge fan of it so let’s get into the mechanics. Also check this extra attack.
Mechanics
- Level: Cantrip
- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range/Area: 5 ft
- Components: V, M
- Duration: Instantaneous
- School: Evocation
- Attack/Save: Melee
- Damage/Effect: Fire
So there’s two different damage calculations you’re gonna have to run here. The first on target one and the second on the target two. So target is an adjacent target within five feet i’ll get into that a little bit more so later on. For the first target though will be your initial damage.
So at first level you actually don’t get a bonus to initial damage but at 5th, 11th and 17th level you get an additional d8. So at 5th level it’s one, at 11th of those two and 17th level its three. Check out this sneak attack as well.
The second target though it is at first just your spell-casting modifier. So if you have like if you’re a paladin you look at +3 to charisma and then you get a +3 to damage. At fifth level you get 1d8 plus your modifier, 11th level 2d8 + the mod and 17th level 3d8 + the mod. So fairly we have another cantrip like this so far so fairly new.
The cast time is one action, the range is 5ft, the duration is instantaneous, the saving throw would just be the target AC attack and the components are verbal and material which is pretty handy the material by the way is just a weapon itself. So you can still do dual wield or use a heavy shield with disability.
The school is unsurprisingly evocation. I guess it could be enchantment but in this case it is evocation and the damage type is unsurprisingly fire. Now let’s look into the full description here and lets check how does green flame blade work.
Description
As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell’s range, otherwise the spell fails. On a hit, the target suffers the attack’s normal effects, and green fire leaps from the target to a different creature of your choice that you can see within 5 feet of it. The second creature takes fire damage equal to your spellcasting ability modifier.
This spell’s damage increases when you reach higher levels. At 5th level, the melee attack deals an extra 1d8 fire damage to the target, and the fire damage to the second creature increases to 1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. Both damage rolls increase by 1d8 at 11th level and 17th level.
So couple of things to unpack there, you have to be able to see the second target and that’s kind of a granted in some cases. I don’t think acid splash has that caveat to it though. So that is interesting, so not only does that prevent a visible enemies but it also won’t effect in the mix as well which is a couple these cantrips can but this one really can’t in this case.
Secondly….i don’t know, i know a lot of people are quite big fans of it. I think it depends on rebuild, more than anything else here. Let’s look at some alternative uses. Also check out spell attack bonus.
Alternative Uses
i hate to disappoint you guys here but i really couldn’t think of any now that i’m writing this though. It might be possible to use this to really incite like a good old tavern role. Outside of that i can’t really think of any uses for it. There are certainly give me more areas where it’s more effective combat wise, like in restrictive environments so enemies kind of layer on top of each other. It’d be really good there, yeah i couldn’t really make any other cases for it in all honesty. Also read is flame blade good 5e.
Conclusion
If you have any ideas though please feel free to comment down below, if you have any cool stories attached to this cantrip as well that’d be great. I know it really is a staple amongst a lot of different classes hexblade, warlocks really like using it. There’s a gish wizards really like it as well. If you have any ideas i’d really like to hear and many full stories as well. With that out of the way guys i hope you all have a great day and as always happy casting everyone.
