Diseased Giant Rat 5E Monster

Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 35th episode of our beasts series. We have a very interesting beast in store for us today, in the way that i think this is the first beast that i am seriously going to abuse in combat. I love this one and i’ll get into why a little bit here and a little bit in a later article as well. But needless to say it’s pretty damn neat. We’re talking about the diseased giant rat dnd 5e.

This creature is found in the basic rule set and it is considered to be cr1/8 and provides 25 experience points on a kill. Now without further ado let’s take a look at this nasty boys stats. In any case you can also check out this giant rat 5e.

Diseased Giant Rat DnD 5E Stat Block

  • Type: Small beast, unaligned
  • Armor Class: 12
  • Hit Points: 7 (2d6)
  • Speed: 30 ft.

This is considered to be a small beast and that is unaligned as with most beasts and that’s not too surprising. AC of 12 which puts it substantially above a lot of cr0 counterparts, 7 hit points calculated by rolling 2d6 and taking the average. Speed of a 30 feet which puts in a lot of most medium creatures and taking a look at his actual stats there.

Diseased Giant Rat DnD 5E Stats

  • STR: 7 (-2)
  • DEX: 15 (+2)
  • CON: 11 (+0)
  • INT: 2 (-4)
  • WIS: 10 (+0)
  • CHA: 4 (-3)

You’ll notice a +2 to dex but nothing else weren’t really worth bragging about certainly not very charismatic or very smart.

Senses

  • Darkvision 60 ft.,
  • Passive Perception 10
  • Languages
  • Challenge: 1/8 (25 XP)

His senses provide him with 60 feet of darkvision and a passive perception of 10. So taking a look at this what’s so great, nothing yet but trust me there is light at the end of this tunnel. Now let’s check out its other traits.

Other Traits

  • Keen Smell: The rat has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

So the disease giant rat has access to keen smell which loans an advantage on perception checks that rely on smell which is nice.

  • Pack Tactics: The rat has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the rat’s allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated.

It also has access to pack tactics which give an advantage on attack roles so long as an allies within five feetof the targeted creature. Now let’s take a look at its action. You can also check out this swarm of rats 5e.

Action

  • Bite: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or contract a disease. Until the disease is cured, the target can’t regain hit points except by magical means, and the target’s hit point maximum decreases by 3 (1d6) every 24 hours. If the target’s hit point maximum drops to 0 as a result of this disease, the target dies.

Now this is where the diseased rat really shows his stuff. So you can do the bite attack, melee weapon attack +4 to hit, reach of five feet, the target is one target, on a hit it deals 4 piercing damage, calculated by rolling 1d4 and adding 2. However there’s a little bit more to this rat.

If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a dc-10 constitution saving throw or contract a disease. Until the disease is cured the target can’t regain hit points except by magical means and the targets hit points maximum decreases by 3 or 1d6 every 24 hours. If the target hit points maximum drops to zero as a result of this disease the target dies.

I love this i think this is the coolest thing, it was also a great way to kind of get parties to stop relying on healing kids and healing potions so much. Because i know a lot of dms kind of write themselves into a corner where they either provide an NPC that gives them potions provides them with too many potions or provides them too much gold and they basically become unkillable.

But this simple CR 1/8 creature is able to completely nullify that, i think that is hilariously cool. Then again it does depend on how your world structured, if you have a magical rich or high magic society odds are magical healing isn’t that hard to come by but still i think for an early level adventuring campaign this could really cause some headaches.

Description

Some giant rats carry vile diseases that they spread with their bites.
