Today we’re gonna be taking a look at the constrictor snake dnd 5e, d&d has a ton of snakes in it by the way and i’m progressively figuring that out as i write these articles.
The constrictor snake is found in the basic rules and it is considered to be cr one quarter, that is to say it’s a little bit more challenging but provides a 50 experience points on a kill at least more challenging relative to everything else we’ve been covering. In any case let’s quickly check out his stats.
Constrictor Snake DnD 5E Stat Block
- Type: Large beast, unaligned
- Armor Class: 12
- Hit Points: 13 (2d10 + 2)
- Speed: 30 ft., swim 30 ft.
So the constrictor snake considered to be a large beast that is unaligned which means he’s pretty big. The AC is 12 and he has 13 hit points calculated by rolling the average of 2d10 and plus two. Under his speed he has 30-feet normal and 30-foot swim which is pretty cool and makes sense cuz you know he’s a snake that can go to a river or what have you but. You’ll see he’s very strong and very dexterous and hardy as well. His only real pitfalls or his low intelligence and charisma that makes sense cuz you know he’s a snake. Now looking at his senses he has 10 feet of blindsight and a passive perception of 10 which is just above the current average. Now let’s quickly take a look at his actions here because that’s where you really can understand what he’s up to. Don’t miss this giant poisonous snake 5e.
Actions
- Bite: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage.
- Constrict: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 14). Until this grapple ends, the creature is restrained, and the snake can’t constrict another target.
So he’s two actions, he can either bite or constrict. His bite is a melee weapon attack, +4 to hit which is pretty decent reach of five feet it can only target one creature and deals a five piercing damage calculated by rolling 1d6 and adding two.
Under his constrict it is also a melee weapon attack, +4 to hit, reach of five feet, one creature can be targeted and deals six or 1d8 plus 2 bludgeoning damage. The target is grappled, escape dc is 14 until the grapple ends the creature is restrained and the snake can’t constrict another target.
I think the best way of using these guys, certainly almost terrifying is using them in murky swamps or rivers or things of that nature. Put the party in an environment they’re already unfamiliar with and then constrict and restrain them down there. I think that would be hilarious, the way breathing mechanics work in 5e is actually really hard to drown a person but that being said, a players won’t inherently know that so it’s a really good way of building suspense and a sense of urgency to escaping them.
And if you combine it with the poisonous snake which you’ve covered in an earlier article you can make for a very interesting kind of the constructing snake for example constricts them and poisonous snake or maybe even something aquatic like quippers go in for the kill or maybe they fight each other, i don’t know it’s kind of up to your discretion as a dungeon master.
