Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 57th episode of our first level spell series. Today we’re going to be talking about magic missile spell dnd 5e which is one of the oldest and most well known spells in d&d as a whole. I remember using this in a lot of the video game adaptations to d&d technically speaking by that i mean like Baldur’s Gate (BG) neverwinter nights stuff of that nature.
And man it was always a first choice of mine as it should be a first choice of yours and we’ll get into that in a little bit here. It is usable by the sorcerer and the wizard and naturally through extension anyone else with access to their spell lists and it has found in the wonderful players handbook. That being said, let’s take a look at its mechanics.
Mechanics
- Level: 1st
- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range/Area: 120 ft
- Components: V, S
- Duration: Instantaneous
- School: Evocation
- Attack/Save: None
- Damage/Effect: Force
It damage is 1d4 plus one per dart so each dart deals 1d4+1 and there’s three darts total that is summon plus 1 additional dart per spell slot level above first 1d4+1per dart (3darts+1 per slot level above first).. Which is very cool stuff!
The effect at a glance is as followed; Send darts at one target or several targets within a range. They all hit simultaneously. Which is pretty important to note.
The cast time is one action and the range is an impressive 120 feet, the duration is instantaneous and the components are somatic and verbal so you have to gesture with one hand and speak forth an incantation.
The school is unsurprisingly evocation and the damage type is the creme de la creme force damage. Which is really good, not a lot of creatures resistant to it or immune to it, so it’s pretty solid choice. That being said, let’s take a look at its full description out. Have you checked out our jim’s magic missile!
Description
You create three glowing darts of magical force. Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range. A dart deals 1d4 + 1 force damage to its target. The darts all strike simultaneously, and you can direct them to hit one creature or several.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the spell creates one more dart for each slot level above 1st.
Very interesting stuff! In terms of what i like to note is it’s a guaranteed hit, there’s no attack roll needed, there’s no saving throw acquired if it hits it hits. There’s a couple of magic items and abilities that can kinda circumvent that but for the most part yeah it’s almost a guaranteed hit, i really liked it. That being said, let’s take a look at some alternative uses here. Also read this 5e when to give magic weapons.
Alternative Uses
The best way i’ve ever seen magic missile spell dnd 5e stats used personally is to disrupt concentration on a heavily armored or heavily protected target. For example let’s say a wizard cast mage armor on himself has a bunch of other items that boost AC ring of protection, cloak of protection stuff of that nature and there beatin the ever-lovin heck out of you with flaming sphere well with one well-placed dart there’s a chance of that flaming sphere might not be an issue anymore.
Upon taking damage, they’d have to make a constitution check in order to maintain their concentration which has a chance of just fixing your problem entirely. I really like it, i think that’s the best use i’ve seen for it personally. You may also like to read this wand of magic missile 5e.
Conclusion

I hope you all have a wonderful day and as always happy casting.
