Goodberry Spell DnD 5E

Hello spellcasters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 39th episode of our first level spell series, by the way it’s not a cantrip. Today we’re not talking about the bad berry or the best berry. Today we’re just talking about dnd 5e goodberry spell.

This is usable the druid and the ranger and it is found in the players handbook. I’m not really doing it quite justice, this is a great spell. Let’s take a quick look at some rough mechanics. So you can kind of better understand what we’re talking about. You can also read dnd goodberry abuse.

Mechanics

  • Level: 1st
  • Casting Time: 1 Action
  • Range/Area: Touch
  • Components: V, S, M *
  • Duration: Instantaneous
  • School: Transmutation
  • Attack/Save: None
  • Damage/Effect: Healing

Your cast time is the standard one action, the range is touch, the duration is instantaneous. The effect at least at a glance is as followed; you get 10 berries infused with magic, they last for 24 hours. Each berry restores one HP and gives you one day’s worth of nourishment. Also check out who can cast goodberry?.

The components somatic, material and verbal. So holy trinity. The material component is a spring of mistletoe if you’re curious. And the school is transmutation. Which isn’t super surprising.

With that being said, let’s take a look at the full description so we understand exactly what we’re talking about and we’ll break that down a little bit…there’s kind of a, there’s a little bit of controversy over this one so yeah let’s head over to the description. It reads as followed.

Description

Up to ten berries appear in your hand and are infused with magic for the duration. A creature can use its action to eat one berry. Eating a berry restores 1 hit point, and the berry provides enough nourishment to sustain a creature for one day. The berries lose their potency if they have not been consumed within 24 hours of the casting of this spell. * – (a sprig of mistletoe)

Alright! So a couple things to unpack there! they got a shelf life and yes you can consume more than one on your own. So this is essentially heals you 10 hit points. It’s a guaranteed 10 which is super great, you only explode from too much nourishment or anything there.

They are still berries right! something i would like to point out and the reason why this spell is a little bit controversial is the line where it says a creature can use its action to eat one berry. Meaning the creature consuming is the one that has to use the action. The reason this is controversial is a lot of people use this spell to essentially get down to players back into the fray.

For example if your fighter goes down and you cram a berry in his mouth he second wins he’s back up, he’s good to go. It doesn’t work like that at least not by raw, because it has to be its own action, it can’t be your action. So i hope that makes sense. You may also like to read dnd 5e goodberry life cleric.

Honestly i allow it either way, i think it depends on how the players are planning on using it and if they’re exploiting it then i’ll call it into effect but if they’re not that’s fine. All right! That being said, let’s take a look at some alternative uses here. You can also check out this can wizards learn goodberry?

Alternative Uses

So the safest one i can consider is using this spell as a way to keep your players sustained in environments where that would ordinarily be impossible. So barren wastelands, desserts, things of that nature would probably be the best setting to use this spell, i mean it’s good for on-the-fly healing as well but it kind of messes of action economy.

If you’re gonna burn a full action on a potential one to ten hit points you know it might be better off just using the dash action and getting away. Also check out this can you eat more than one goodberry?

Conclusion

In any case that’s just my thoughts on it, i could be wrong! That being said, if you guys have any thoughts, questions, opinions uses or cool stories involving goodberry build 5e i’d really like to hear them down in the comments below, thank you so much guys it’s been great getting to know all of you, have a great day and as always happy casting.
