This is one of my all-time favorite spells and it is featured in tons of well-known dnd campaigns and podcasts. Today we’re taking a look at what is the float spell in d&d?.
This spell is usable by the sorcerer, wizard and the artificer and it is a third party spell. Which is incredible because it being the off access to it. Now let’s take a quick look at some of its mechanics here and let’s get started.
Mechanics
- Level: 1st
- Casting Time: 1 Action, see below
- Range/Area: 30 feet
- Components: V, S, M (a bit of cork)
- Duration: Concentration up to 10 minutes
- School: Transmutation
Description
You create a single Medium-sized or smaller creature or object buoyancy, causing it to float safely at the surface even in heavy seas and to grow steadily to the surface at 50 feet per round if underwater unless the creature strikes an obstacle that blocks its upward movement. While affected by float, the target gains additionally gains advantage on all swim checks on the surface.
A creature which is affected by float could voluntarily dive or swim downward, using its movement, if it can make a DC 10 swim check to which the advantage granted above does not apply. If it stops swimming, or fails the swim check, the float spell causes the creature to drift upwards again. Air-breathing and water-breathing creatures both can breathe while at the surface using this spell. You can also check out tenser’s floating disk vs floating disk.
An unattended item up to 50 ponds can be raised to the surface with a float spell. Floating objects simply remain at the surface but may drift around the area, moving as wind and wave action dictate. Float may be cast as a reaction although this reduces the duration to 1 minute.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell by using the spell slot of 2nd level or higher you may target an another Medium-sized or smaller creature or object. All of the targets must be within 30 ft. of each other.
