The cast time is one action, the range is self, how long does armor of agathys last? the duration is an impressive 1 hour and the effect at a glance is as followed, you’ve gained 5 temporary hit points and inflict a five cold damage whenever you take melee damage, essentially so long you have those hit points you deal 5 cold damage every time someone attacks you. At higher levels slots above 2nd level gain an extra five temporary hit points and five extra cold damage per level. Ton of potential there. The components are somatic, material and verbal. The material component in this case is just a cup of water so pretty easy to come by.
The school is abjuration as well which is not too surprising given it as a defensive orientated spell. Description
A protective magical force surrounds you, manifesting as a spectral frost that covers you and your gear. You gain 5 temporary hit points for the duration. If a creature hits you with a melee attack while you have these hit points, the creature takes 5 cold damage.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, both the temporary hit points and the cold damage increase by 5 for each slot.

Alternative Uses
The only one i could really think of would be to use it to impress and instill fear in people. Giving you advantage on your persuasion checks or your intimidation checks.
