Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 15th episode of our second level spell series. Today we are going to be taking a look at one of the more interesting spells of the second level list in the way that it’s really cool and has a lot of utility benefit to quite a few of the races out there.
Today we’re going to be talking about continual flame spell which is quite frankly one of the cooler names we’ve covered so far, it is usable by the cleric, wizard and artificer and it is found in the good old players handbook so we should all have access to it. Fantastic with that hyped up intro out of the way let’s take a look at it’s mechanics.
Mechanics
- Level: 2nd
- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range/Area: Touch
- Components: V, S, M *
- Duration: Until Dispelled
- School: Evocation
- Attack/Save: None
- Damage/Effect: Creation
Your cast time is the standard one action, the range is touch, the duration is until dispelled and the effect at a glance is as followed:
Imbune an object with magical flame. The flame gives off no heat and doesn’t require oxygen. The flame can also be hidden, but not extinguished.
The components are the holy trinity somatic, material and verbal. Somatic means you have to gesture with one hand, the material component in this case is ruby dust worth 50 gold piece which the spell consumes so please bear that in mind and the verbal component means you have to speak forth an incantation. The school is evocation which is really weird, i thought it would have an enchantment for sure but i mean i guess not. In any case let’s take a look at the full description to just better flesh it out.
Description
A flame, equivalent in brightness to a torch, springs forth from an object that you touch. The effect looks like a regular flame, but it creates no heat and doesn’t use oxygen. A continual flame can be covered or hidden but not smothered or quenched. * – (ruby dust worth 50 gp, which the spell consumes)
Very very cool stuff! In case you’re unfamiliar with the torch brightness it’s 20 feet of bright light and an additional 20 feet of dim light. Needless to say, if your race doesn’t have darkvision in a dark place this spell could literally save your neck. Which is really cool!
Not to mention the fact that it looks like actual flame makes it very cool from a thematic standpoint. That being said, let’s take a look at some continual flame 5e uses here.
Alternative Uses
So i thought of three main ones but there’s a lot more on this spell just because of the way it functions. The one that i would like to point out that i haven’t heard anyone talking about is this would be the ideal type of light to use in labs or alchemists studios i figure they’re called off the top of my head two places alchemists work in 5e.
Reason being they deal with a lot of flammable substances and having an open flame that could react with them would be incredibly dangerous with continual flame, however you still gain the benefit of having that light without the added risk of a possible explosion.
Along the same vein miners could really use this flame as well to great advantage. So what do you cast continual flame on? Basically just cast it on their hat or pickaxe or whatever and that would be more than enough for them to get into the areas that would otherwise be too difficult to get in with an open flame.
Alternatively if you could find a store willing to pay over the fifty gold piece price to make it or even provide the ruby dust for you. You could sell these for a profit. My DM and what his campaigns they did that the pretty great effect. In any case i know there’s a lot more but i’d rather leave you guys to come up with a few of them.
Conclusion
If you have any cool ideas, interesting concepts or cool stories involving continual flame 5e please put it down to the comment section beneath so we can all check it out.
