That being said, let’s take a look at the mechanics.

The cast time is the standard one action and it can be ritual casted for an additional ten minutes. The range is self but it extends from thirty feet in every direction of forming a thirty foot radius. The duration is 10 minutes and it is a concentration spell meaning if you are hit while casting this spell you have to make a constitution saving throw also you cannot use another concentration in spell we are using this one.
The effect at a glance is as followed you can sense, locate and identify: poisons, poisonous creatures and diseases within range. The components are the holy trinity that means it is somatic, material and verbal meaning you have to gesture with one hand.
There is a material component and it is not consumed, if you’re curious it is a you a leaf and there is a verbal component as well meaning you have to speak forth an incantation. And the school unsurprisingly is a divination. Let’s take a look at the full description, so we can really get a feel for the wording of this spell and understand its limitations. Very cool stuff! I would like to point out that this spell is super useful. My goodness i’ve glazed over this thing, probably well over a hundred times and i have never honestly given it a thorough look, so in other spells where i mentioned targets have to be visible this one doesn’t meaning you just inherently know everything about it without actually being able to see it. Do you know the answer for is blight a good spell 5e then make sure to check this article now.
So that means invisibility stuff like that won’t affect it. Also the ability to understand what kind of poisonous creature it is, is a huge especially if you’re role-playing a tracker, you just immediately know within your vicinity what this is. I think that is super super cool and puts you in a really good position to react accordingly and get your party up to speed. Also read cure poison and disease 5e.
This is i honestly want to say this is one of the biggest hidden gems we’ve covered on this series so far and i would really consider giving this a look over, especially for clerics. I mean come on clerics have no reason not to use us at least once in a while like an access to the full spell lists for crying out loud. Anyways ranting aside let’s take a look at some alternative uses here. You may also like to read 5e what type of damage is sneak attack.
Alternative Uses
In terms of characters who i could really see using this! Any character with a love for science and medicine would be all over the spell in a heartbeat, taking samples or writing notes in a journal or anything likr that at procuring the deadliest poisons to be able to use them with your weapons i think that is so cool!
Alternatively you can also use it to treat people if you’re a doctor or if you have a very charitable heart or healer you can cure people and i would definitely give advantage or bonuses to those checks for sure if you were to combine them with this spell. Also read is poison spray a cantrip?
The fact that you can immediately identified the disease and poison is super useful. Now that i’m writing this out loud another time thinking about it this puts you in a great spot to be able to avoid a lot of common pitfalls. Would you like to know the basic guide for what are the rules for poison in d&d?
You’ll be able to diagnose evaporations them as soon as you cast this spell even if it hasn’t fully manifested in a character or other lycanthropy this is so super useful especially campaign set in places like burrowia. I’m blown away! I canot believe i’ve looked over this so many times and never honestly given a thorough look through.
Conclusion
That being said, if you have any alternative uses for, any cool stories or any builds that a function around dnd 5e spell detect poison and disease please let me know down beneath in the comment section.
