Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 9th episode of our second level spell series. Today we’re gonna be taking a look at beast sense spell dnd 5e which i really like honestly i see a lot of potential upside for the spell.
It is usable by the druid and the ranger which is kind of cool cuz barkskin is also usable by the druid and the ranger and it was our previous one so it’s just really weird how the fates do with this side if these things. Fantastic it is also much like barkskin found in the players handbook which is pretty eerie but pretty cool as well. In any case with that intro out of the way let’s take a look at its mechanics.

Your cast time is the standard one action but it can also be ritual casted for an additional ten minutes. Which is really handy i love ritual spells. The range is a touch which is really good as well. Duration is one hour and it is sadly concentration so bear that in mind as you’re using it. You may also like to read this creature sense 5e.
The effect at a glance is as followed: You can use actions to perceive through a beasts senses. Which is really neat. The components are just somatic which implies you can kind of cast this a little bit stealthily, you just have to gesture with one hand if you don’t know what somatic means in d&d 5e. And the school is a divination which kind of make sense in a weird way. In any case with that out of the way let’s take a look at its full description to just flesh it out a little bit better. Description
You touch a willing beast. For the duration of the spell, you can use your action to see through the beast’s eyes and hear what it hears, and continue to do so until you use your action to return to your normal senses.
Very cool stuff! Honestly once again i really liked it, i really see the potential upside. Before we get this specific uses a couple things i’d like to point out. The first and foremost is unlike a lot of the other beast related spells, this does not cap you cap you at a certain intelligence modifier. What that means is you can use this on more intelligent beasts to equal effect. Check out this beast barbarian 5e.
Secondly it has to be a willing beast so it can’t just be some random beasts you find on the side of the road unless you manage to befriend that random beast somehow and thirdly it kind of implies that you can’t access extra sensory organs is strictly says you see through its eyes and hear what it hears. But if as some kind of organ that you don’t have, allows it to perceive vibrations in the ground then probably not allowed. However as a DM i’d allow it personally i’m just let you know that by raw your DM could say no to you and they could be right on the money. So i would really really suggest running it past them beforehand. Fantastic, with that disclaimer out of the way let’s take a look at some alternative uses here. Alternative Uses
So what i really like is just using the beast of scope of play so pick a beast that belongs there something like a rat or a spider have them go there before you and just pursue through its senses see what’s up. Secondly you could cast this on shall we say an enemy’s cat or dog or animal companion that you temporarily befriend and you could use it to locate their hideout and several other treasure troves along the way, depending on kind of what your DM rules.
And thirdly this is a great way to get darkvision, just saying cheap darkvision. Tons of added benefits to it, i just really like it. It is great for spying as well through that same kind of assumption. Fantastic stuff! Also check out this beasts 5e.
