We have a super interesting beast in store for us today and one that i will hopefully use a lot of my upcoming campaigns. We’re looking at the stench kow dnd. This creature is found under the volo’s guide to monsters and it is considered to be a cr one quarter.
Now it’s really interesting i had to kind of dig around for an actual description on this guy. So the description i’m gonna be using is found in the tome of horrors complete book. It is produced by necromancer games inc and as kind of based on gary gygax. So i think it’s as about as officials it can be and it describes the stench kow is as below.

Description
The stench kow is a cattle found in the lower planes, mainly in the hills, their kind of bison like creatures but they’re not too dissimilar from the cattle in the material plane and they’re used as a food by the dozens of the lower plane as well and are found in large herds wandering the wastelands of the nether region.
Typically about 8 feet long weighing about 3000 pounds, it’s fur is orange or brown in color and modeled with green throughout. So pretty cool stuff there, i really do like them, now without further ado. Let’s take a quick look at their stats. You can also check out jaculi dnd 5e.
Stench Kow DnD 5E Stat Block
- Type: Large beast, unaligned
- Armor Class: 10
- Hit Points: 15 (2d10 + 4)
- Speed: 30 ft.
Stench kow 5e is considered to be a large beast and that is unaligned. 10 AC, 15 hit points though which is actually quite nice and that is calculated by rolling 2d10 and adding 4. And it has a speed of 30 feet. Now let’s take a look at its actual stats.
Stench Kow DnD 5E Stats
- STR: 18 (+4)
- DEX: 10 (+0)
- CON: 14 (+2)
- INT: 2 (-4)
- WIS: 10 (+0)
- CHA: 4 (-3)
- Damage Resistances: Cold, Fire, Poison
- Senses: Darkvision 60 ft., Passive Perception 10
- Languages: —
- Challenge: 1/4 (50 XP)
You’ll notice very strong coming +4 with strength, also decent constitution coming with +2, Outside of that not too dissimilar from your average beast. Now the stench kow does actually have some resistances, namely resistance to cold, fire and poison which is pretty kind of par for the course in your dealing with anything found in the hells.
Under senses you’ll see 60 feet of dark vision and a passive perception of 10 which is cool enough. Now the stench kow has some other traits as well. Don’t miss this rothe 5e.
Other Traits
The first being pertty standard for most kind of bison like herd beasts, the charge attack.
Charge: If the cow moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a gore attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 7 (2d6) piercing damage.
How what makes the stench cow incredibly unique is its stench trait.
Stench: Any creature other than a stench kow that starts its turn within 5 feet of the stench kow must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the start of the creature’s next turn. On a successful saving throw, the creature is immune to the stench of all stench kows for 1 hour.
Very interesting stuff! The stench cow also of course has an action. Namely the gore attack.
Actions
Gore: Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage.
It is considered to be a melee weapon attack, plus six to hit which is great, reach of five feet, targets one target and deals seven piercing damage on a hit. Calculated by rolling 1d6 and adding 4. I like the idea of using these in kind of early level campaigns, i think they play out pretty cool thematically, i like their stench trait.
That being said, i can also see there being a potion realting it to that stench or some other form of pranking a device or other arcane instrument. I think that’d be pretty cool stuff! You might find your favorite stench kow dnd 5e spells from this page.
