Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 42nd episode of our beasts series. Today we’re looking at the humble mule 5e monsters despite how simple this beast is there’s a little bit of debate in and around it, so i’ll give you my interpretation of my ruling a little bit later on here.
But the mule is found in the basic rule set that is so far as to say it’s found in a lot of those starter books yet and it is considered to be cr:1/8 and provides 25 experience points on a kill. In any case let’s quickly check out its mechanics here.
Mechanics
- Type: Medium beast, unaligned
- Armor Class: 10
- Hit Points: 11 (2d8 + 2)
- Speed: 40 ft.
So the mule is considered to be a medium beast and that is unaligned. So they are about the same size as your just average joke. It’s AC is considered to be 10, it has a 11 hit points calculated by rolling 2d8 with a plus 2 modifier and it has a speed of 40 feet which is pretty good! Now let’s take a look at its actual stats here. Do you know what is the donkey dnd 5e price.
Mule 5E Monsters Stats
- STR: 14 (+2)
- DEX: 10 (+0)
- CON: 13 (+1)
- INT: 2 (-4)
- WIS: 10 (+0)
- CHA: 5 (-3)
- Senses: Passive Perception 10
- Languages: —
- Challenge: 1/8 (25 XP)
- Beast of Burden: The mule is considered to be a Large animal for the purpose of determining its carrying capacity.
- Sure-Footed: The mule has advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws made against effects that would knock it prone.
You’ll notice he’s a very strong and a little bit of heft to him and that’s about it, not particularly smart but you know he’s kind of just a basic kind of labor-related animal. Under senses he only has a passive perception of 10 which is still okay.
The else is the beast of burden trait and this is kind of the more debated trait. So consider to be a large animal for the purpose determining carrying capacity. So the debate is whether or not the mule can be used as a mount for medium creatures because mountain you’re really only allowed to mount one size above you or one size plus above you should say so huge stuff like that. Also read this horse 5e.
But my personal interpretation of this is while it is true a mule could carry a person i would not allow that person to gain the benefits of being mounted. We have a whole article on mountain combat so i’m not really gonna get into it too too far but what i will say is there’s no reasonable indicator that a person would be able to successfully use a mule in combat.
It’s not really what they’re intended for in any real way shape or form so to expect to have full control over the mule while in combat would be a very hard stretch and you would likely just run away so that would be my ruling on it, ultimately DMs might be different, so if you have a different opinion please put it down beneath in the comment section and feel free to challenge my idea. Don’t miss this mastiff 5e.
He also has the sure-footed feature which we’ve covered a couple times. It essentially gives an advantage on strength and dex saves made against effects that would knock it prone, which is pretty good stuff! Well let’s quickly take a look at his actions here. You can also check out this wolf monsters 5e.
Actions
- Hooves: Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) bludgeoning damage.
He can do a hooves attack, it is a melee weapon attack, +2 to hit, range of five feet, it can only target one target and deals four bludgeoning damage, calculated by rolling 1d4 and adding two. Very cool stuff! I really like the mule, i probably wouldn’t put them in comabt too too much,
Mechanically there’s just not really a lot to him that i’d be interested in using as a DM, but to have them around the party provide them a cheap way of moving caravans and things of that nature. I think that would be fine and having them as background animals things to use speak with animals on or things of that nature would probably be my best use for them.
Conclusion
That being said, how you would fold them into your games be sure to let me know down beneath in the comment section. Also tell me if you have any thoughts, questions or concerns related to the mule. That being said, i hope you all have a great day and as always happy researching.
