Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the for checking out the 41st episode of our beasts series. Today we have an amazing episode in store for us, as we are taking a look at the best boy and/or girl i don’t discriminate. We’re looking at the Mastiff monster 5e. This amazing majestic animal is found in the basic rules and it’s considered to be a cr:1/8.
It also typically dwells in forest, hill and urban environments at least according to the source material. The mastiff has a very interesting history it was bred by humanoids, for humanoids and it is quite a loyal and keen creature. They can be trained as guard dogs, hunting dogs and war dogs and halflings and other small humanoids ride them as mounts which is so amazing. I love him, now let’s take a quick look at his stats here.
Stats
- Type: Medium beast, unaligned
- Armor Class: 12
- Hit Points: 5 (1d8 + 1)
- Speed: 40 ft.
He’s considered to be a medium beast that is unaligned. As an armor class of 12, although i could argue that armour to be tailor-made to them. They have five hit points calculated by rolling 1d8 and adding a modifier of 1 and it also have a speed of 40 feet which puts them above most other medium creatures. That being said, looking at their main stats.
Stats
- STR: 13 (+1)
- DEX: 14 (+2)
- CON: 12 (+1)
- INT: 3 (-4)
- WIS: 12 (+1)
- CHA: 7 (-2)
- Skills: Perception +3
- Senses: Passive Perception 13
- Languages: —
- Challenge: 1/8 (25 XP)
- Keen Hearing and Smell: The mastiff has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.
You see that they are strong and deterous rather hardy and wise as well. They’re not particularly the brightest and they are not the most charismatic either. I’ve actually been given charisma a decent amount of thought lately and i think the reason why a lot of these beasts have such low charisma is just due to the fact that they cannot communicate.
Almost every charisma ability is something to do with communication it really is an indicative of attractiveness so that’s why at least to the best of my knowledge. If you agree say so down in the comments if you disagree let me know why. He does have a +3 to perception and he has a passive perception of a 13. He also has access to keen hearing and smell which give him advantage on perception checks they rely on hearing or smell. Which is a decent amount of them. Now let’s take a look at its actions.
- Actions: Bite: Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
You will see his bit attack. It is considered to be a melee weapon attack +3 to hit, range of five feet and it can only target one target and it deals four piercing damage on a hit calculated by rolling 1d6 and adding one. And if the target is a creature it must succeed on a dc 11 strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
I really do love the mastiff, i think they’d work great in the way of hunting companions or packs of them roving a city, causing trouble i think that’d be rather interesting in terms of a plot hook or a storyline, outside of that most nobility is quite likely to have them posted as guard dogs so this could make an excellent obstacle for your party members to overcome in creative ways.
Description:
Mastiffs are impressive hounds prized by humanoids for their loyalty and keen senses. Mastiffs can be trained as guard dogs, hunting dogs, and war dogs. Halflings and other Small humanoids ride them as mounts.
Conclusion
That being said, let me know how you would use them in your campaigns in the comment section down beneath. Also be sure to mention if you have any thoughts, questions, comments or concerns regarding the mastiff. That being said, i hope you all have a great day and as always happy researching.
