Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 20th episode of our beast series. Today we are taking a look at the octopus dnd 5e which is arguably one of the best losey or ocean based creatures in the game.
Certainly that we’ve covered so far, that being said! i love him, i think he’s cool, fun and overall i think wizards did them a great disservice by how they started them but you know what else is new. Before we dive into the stats here i just want to say this series has been so much fun to work on, i’m sorry about spam you guys with so many articles but you know they’re really fun, they’re really quick and easy for me to write and it really helps me take a break from a lot of the other more complicated articles. That being said, let’s check out the octopus dnd 5e stats here.
DnD Octopus Monster Stats
- Type: Small beast, unaligned
- Armor Class: 12
- Hit Points: 3 (1d6)
- Speed: 5 ft., swim 30 ft.
So what species is the octopus in d&d? so this is considered to be a small beast and as with most beasts it is unaligned. It has an AC of 12 which is okay i guess, three hit points calculated by rolling a d6, now how fast is the octopus 5e? it has five feet of movement but 30 feet of swimming which is obviously its preferred terrain and we’ll get into that in a little bit as well. Now let’s take a look at its actual stats. In any case you can also read this dnd octopus familiar.
Octopus DnD Stats
- STR: 4 (-3)
- DEX: 15 (+2)
- CON: 11 (+0)
- INT: 3 (-4)
- WIS: 10 (+0)
- CHA: 4 (-3)
My biggest grievance is that they made them so dumb. I don’t really know why octopods are traditionally wildly intelligent so it kind of baffles me they didn’t even give them like that great of a wisdom either which just insult to injury and dexterity you know okay sure but outside of that, i don’t know now let us take a look at his skills.
Skills
- Perception +2
- Stealth +4
- Senses: Darkvision 30 ft., Passive Perception 12
- Languages: —
- Challenge: 0 (10 XP)
At least he gets a +2 to perception and a +4 to stealth which is so helpful. Now taking a look at his senses his darkvision of 30 feet which is nice and also passive perception of 12 which is better than a lot of the other beasts we’ve covered to be honest.
Now that’s not it for the octopus as you may imagine. Let’s take a look at his other traits.
Other Traits
- Hold Breath: So he can hold his breath While out of water, the octopus can hold its breath for 30 minutes.
- Underwater Camouflage: The octopus has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made while underwater.
- Water Breathing: Naturally it gains the benefit of water breathing and the octopus can breathe only underwater.
Which makes sense cause that’s where they live 🙂 Now the octopus is unique in the way that he actually has two actions that’s right! This is the first creature we’ve covered in this series with two actions be prepared for a lot more by the way i was checking ahead earlier. Don’t miss this giant octopus dnd 5e.
Actions
- Tentacles: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 10). Until this grapple ends, the octopus can’t use its tentacles on another target.
It’s considered to be a melee weapon attack +4 to hit which is nice. Range of five feet, it can only target one person, deals one bludgeoning damage and the target is grapple that needing a dc-10 to escape until the grapple ends the octopus can’t use this tentacles on another target but you can still wipe that one, pretty cool stuff! I like it.
- Ink Cloud (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest): A 5-foot-radius cloud of ink extends all around the octopus if it is underwater. The area is heavily obscured for 1 minute, although a significant current can disperse the ink. After releasing the ink the octopus can use the dash action as a bonus action.
How sweet is that! Does this not seem like an underwater rogue to some degree or another i don’t know i think that’s super cool! I like that, kind of just throws a ninja smokebomb and straight-up dips, i love it. I would have really like to use these guys in kind of any form of ocean exploration as a newer character group to get them used to underwater combat. Check out this colossal squid 5e.
I think that would be great! We haven’t covered underwater combat yet, we will be in a future article there’s not a whole lot to it but still take some getting used to especially for new players. The octopus along with the quipper which we will be talking about later would be absolute great to show new players how to have combat encounters underwater in a nice controlled way that provides very little risk to them. You can also check out this octopus race dnd 5e.
Conclusion
That being said, let me know how you would fold them into your game down beneath in the comment section, i always love hearing what you guys have to say. Also if you have any thoughts, questions, comments, concerns please put them down beneath in the comment section as well i really do appreciate it. That being said, i hope you all have a wonderful day and as always happy researching my friends. Do you know what are octopus like monsters in d&d?.
