Hello spellcasters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 11th episode of our 1st level spell series. I gotta ask you a question…have you ever wanted to be grab it from the x man? If the answer is yes and i know what it is cause you use call as x man characters you’re gonna love this spell.
May i introduce to you catapult spell usable by the sorcerer, wizard and the artificer. And of course through extension anyone else with access to their spell lists and it is found in the ever popular elemental evil players companion. Now let’s take a look at some mechanics here.
Mechanics
- Level: 1
- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range/Area: 60 ft
- Components: S
- Duration: Instantaneous
- School: Transmutation
- Attack/Save: DEX Save
- Damage/Effect: Bludgeoning
Your damage is an impressive 3d8 plus an additional d8 for each spell slot level above 1st. The cast time is one action, the range is a interestingly worded 60 feet. The duration is instantaneous, the saving throw is dexterity, the components are just somatic. Meaning you just have to be able to gesture with one of those hands to make this effect possible. Also read this dnd 5e catapult magic damage.
The school is transmutation and the damage type is bludgeoning, although i feel like you the damage type depends on what it is you’re using but that something to your DM to discuss not for me to deal with. Let’s check out the full description so we know exactly how does the catapult work in d&D?
Description
Choose one object weighing 1 to 5 pounds within range that isn’t being worn or carried. The object flies in a straight line up to 90 feet in a direction you choose before falling to the ground, stopping early if it impacts against a solid surface. If the object would strike a creature, that creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the object strikes the target and stops moving. When the object strikes something, the object and what it strikes each take 3d8 bludgeoning damage.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the maximum weight of objects that you can target with this spell increases by 5 pounds, and the damage increases by 1d8, for each slot level above 1st.
Wow that is a mouthful……my goodness! So there’s a lot to unpack there. First and foremost i’d like to point out that you can technically change the distance together upto 150 feet. I think that’s very cool! Something because you choose the object that is within a range and the range is 150 feet which makes it one of the longest ranged spells out there. Without modifying ofcourse. You can also read this cold rules 5e.
So taking object that 60 feet away alright. Cast this spell it goes an additional 90 feet so that’s a total of 150 feet which is a very substantial none other than you are actually thinking about it. It doesn’t specify the object and that’s why i think bludgeoning, there is nothing stopping you from a using dangar for example and that would be slashing or even piercing damage depending on how you really want to look at it. Also read this cold weather rules 5e
They can increase the weight by five pounds, i just think this is a ton of versatility here. If you really wanted to burn high level spell slot to launch a door flying across the room i think that’d be incredible, just very neat, very cool flavorwise. That being said, let’s take a look at some alternative uses here of which they are quite a few and you will get some idea on how do you use the catapult spell in 5e?.
Alternative Uses
So i think the best way of one of the more creative ways of using this spell would be to essentially use it to deliver messages. I mean that’s one way to use it. Whether the messages are in piece of paper, or rock you sending through building i think that’d pretty cool. Don’t miss this 5e when to give magic weapons.
Something else i’d like to point out is due to the huge range of objects you could pick. You could potentially using pretty cool stuff, for example since some keys to your companions cell from all the way across the other end of the jail. You can use it to quickly get rid of huge amounts of gold coins, germs or whatever if have you from a bank robbery.
You could even use it on a flask of alchemist fire, launching into the point from great distances dealing extra damage in the process and one of the coolest alternative uses i have ever heard of is using in a grappling hooks to be able to climb ridiculously high cliffs or buildings or whatever you. So cool i have this spell in my arcane trickster, i haven’t had a chance to use it any crazy yet, from growing it definitely start.
Conclusion
That being said, if you have any cool coocky or crazy stories and uses involving this catapult 5e spell i’d love to see them down in the comments below and i know everyone reading this article would as well. I hope you all have a great day and as always happy casting everyone.
