Hello magic practitioners of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out 33rd episode of our cantrip series. Today we’re going to be talking about one of my personal favorites shape water 5e spell. Usable by the druid, sorcerer, wizard and through extension anyone else with access to their spell lists and it is found in the elemental evil players companion which i would highly recommend getting by the way it is great in terms of flavorful spells. The mechanics are as followed.
Mechanics

- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range/Area: 30 ft
- Components: S
- Duration: Instantaneous
- School: Transmutation
- Attack/Save: None
- Damage/Effect: Control
The cast time is one action, the range is a measly 30 feet, the duration is instantaneous, the effect is choose a five foot cube of water and manipulate it in one of the following ways…change the flow of water and/or move it 5ft in any direction. Form simple shapes and animations, change the waters color and opacity, freeze the water, so long as there are no creatures within. Also read this shape water 5e blood.
The components are just somatic you just have to move your hand, the school is transmutation. Now let’s take a look at the full description just for flavor purposes and so we all know we’re on the same page.
Description
You choose an area of water that you can see within range and that fits within a 5-foot cube. You manipulate it in one of the following ways: You instantaneously move or otherwise change the flow of the water as you direct, up to 5 feet in any direction. This movement doesn’t have enough force to cause damage. You cause the water to form into simple shapes and animate at your direction.
This change lasts for 1 hour. You change the water’s color or opacity. The water must be changed in the same way throughout. This change lasts for 1 hour. You freeze the water, provided that there are no creatures in it. The water unfreezes in 1 hour. If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have no more than two of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as an action.
So very cool! There’s a lot to unpack there. But it’s super useful in so many ways. Very much so just on your own that expense of your own creativity. Now lets take a look at some alternative uses that i found to be particularly interesting and very helpful in my campaigns.
Alternative Uses
Firstly you can use it to build ice walls and give yourself cover which i think is amazing and is almost game breaking in some senses but circumstantially very dependent. You can also use it to trap people in water, you can just not freeze it. So you can drown them hypothetically, you can also move the wate in any direction which implies a vertical as well so you can have floating cubes of water or ice which is incredibly powerful in the right situation.
You can also create animations out of it so you could create a links or as all of those one color it shouldn’t be an issue, so a giant black cat for example and that would terrify someone and without a doubt causing the flee or give you advantage on intimidation which i think is great.
You can also use it to fashion simple weapons or shields, just to help a party out if they don’t have anything. So quite a few uses. Also check out this shape water 5e ice.
