Today we’re taking a look at an interesting spell i can be honest with you it was completely unaware this even existed until i had to write this article.
So i learned a lot about it and let me tell you it seems pretty damn impressive. If you’ve used this at all please let me know down in the comment section cuz i have no clue how this plays but it seems awesome. Today we’re talking about maximilian’s earthen grasp dnd 5e spell.
It is usable by the sorcerer and the wizard and it is found in the elemental evil players companion which is a great book, tons of cool spells and this one is surely no exception. Now let’s take a quick look at its mechanics here so you can kind of get why i’m so pumped up about it.

The effect at a glance is as followed: Make a hand of earth, that reaches for a creature within five feet of it. On a failed save the target takes 2d6 damage and is restrained for the spells duration. You can use your action to reinflict the damage. Taking a full damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a success. Alternatively you can use your action to attempt to grab another creature. The creature can remake the save to escape as an action. Don’t miss this 5e fast hands uses.
Your cast time is one action, the range is a 30 feet but the actual area of effect is a 5 foot cube and it reaches out five feet from that cube if that makes sense. The duration is 1 minute and it is a concentration spell. The saving throw is strength which is super cool. You can also check out this most powerful magic weapons 5e.
The components are verbal, material and somatic. If you’re curious about that material component it is a miniature hand sculpted from clay which is really cool! The school is transmutation and the damage is bludgeoning. Now let’s take a look at the full description here so we can better understand exactly how it works.
Description
You choose a 5-foot-square unoccupied space on the ground that you can see within range. A Medium hand made from compacted soil rises there and reaches for one creature you can see within 5 feet of it. The target must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 2d6 bludgeoning damage and is restrained for the spell’s duration.
As an action, you can cause the hand to crush the restrained target, who must make a Strength saving throw. It takes 2d6 bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
To break out, the restrained target can use its action to make a Strength check against your spell save DC. On a success, the target escapes and is no longer restrained by the hand.
As an action, you can cause the hand to reach for a different creature or to move to a different unoccupied space within range. The hand releases a restrained target if you do either. * – (a miniature hand sculpted from clay)
So needless to say pretty damn great! If you’re unfamiliar with the restrained 5e condition. A restrained creature of speed becomes zero and it can’t benefit from any bonuses to speed. Attack rolls against the creature have advantage and the creatures attack rolls have disadvantage and it also has a disadvantage on dexterity saving throws.
So needless to say this is a fantastic spell. Not only does it inflict one of the most detrimental conditions in the game but it also does damage and it occupies space and it’s pretty much guaranteed to be immortal because there’s no hit point given so you can use it for ton of ways there like honestly the uses for this are almost limitless i want to say there’s a lot of them for sure. I really like the fact that its strength based as well because there is a lot of characters namely casters and rogues that typically choose strength as their dump stat. So it makes a lot of sense for this spell they’ll really get in their way. Alternative Uses
So one of the best ways i was thinking of was using it to stop people from running away. Like i understand its range only 30 feet but it occupies space you can use that to seal off doorways. Even if you can’t grab them you’re still gonna impose some form of negative result on them right. Also check out this strongest beholder 5e.
I think that’s really cool! Now there’s nothing to stop you from running up and then i’m moving the hand closer to them again right! Because most people’s movements 30 feet, you can kind of keep trying to catch them as they run away which is pretty cool. Keep reading most powerful fey 5e.
Outside of that this spell could be great when it comes to executing complicated plans. What i mean by that is if you’re trying to keep someone protected or trying to kidnap them or single someone out, this is a great way to make sure they stay where they’re supposed to stay. I really like that, outside of that there’s a lot of great balancing uses for this for example taking a pesky opponent out of the fight entirely and getting to them later while you have a little bit more resources and this really helps balance out action economy. I get that it is concentration and that’s probably the biggest drawbackto this. But all things considered, i think it’s a pretty good use of your concentration.
