Earth Tremor DnD 5E Spell

Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 30th episode of our first level spell series. Today we’re going to be taking a look at earth tremor dnd spell this is a particularly interesting and cool one.

It is usable by the bard, druid, sorcerer, wizard and it is found in the elemental evil players companion with that out of the way let’s take a look at the mechanics and break it down a little bit.

Mechanics

  • Level: 1st
  • Casting Time: 1 Action
  • Range/Area: 10 ft
  • Components: V, S
  • Duration: Instantaneous
  • School: Evocation
  • Attack/Save: DEX Save
  • Damage/Effect: Bludgeoning

So your cast time is the standard one action, the range is 10 feet from self. So form is kind of a 10 foot radius. The duration is instantaneous. The effect at a glance is as followed: Cause a tremor, creatures make a dex saving throw. On a faviled save, the creature takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. The ground in the area becomes difficult terrain, 5ft can be cleared every 1 minute.

At higher levels: You add 1d6 per spell slot level above first. The components are verbal and somatic meaning you have to gesture with one hand and speak forth an incantation and the school unsurprisingly is evocation. Very cool stuff there, let’s take a look at the full description so aware of the wording and why it is that way and how does earth tremor work 5e.

Description

You cause a tremor in the ground within range. Each creature other than you in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone.

If the ground in that area is loose earth or stone, it becomes difficult terrain until cleared, with each 5-foot-diameter portion requiring at least 1 minute to clear by hand.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.

Wow really interesting stuff and really cool from a thematic point of view. This is kind of gandalf’s hole you shall not pass deal. But on a little bit of a larger scale and with the ability to directly effect enemies as opposed to just structures. Really really cool stuff here! With that done let’s take a look at some alternative uses here So that we all get to know is earth tremor good 5e or not.

Alternative Uses

One of the most obvious ones is the ability to prevent a NPC or enemy from running away by utilizing that knocked prone feature, Very cool stuff! Alternatively this would be a great way to deal with large groups of people as well.

And now that i’m actually writing for this i think it would also be incredibly interesting to use this to potentially collapse a building or other structure. The spell doesn’t directly say that you can do that but it certainly doesn’t say you can’t either. I’ve run a pastor DM in any case.

Q: Is earth tremor centered on the Caster?

A: Of course it is! Basically this originates within you and even its range counting up from your square out. In any case this spell does not affect you though. so this is usually not a downside of using the spell.

Conclusion

That being said guys if you have any  crazy alternative uses for dnd 5e earth tremor spells, any creative ways to use it or any cool stories are surrounding it.
